Taking a step into a consistent yoga practice

For many students, starting yoga can feel either intimating or too much of a commitment to undertake, especially in the modern world where people have such busy lifestyles.

Whether it’s time, money or feeling stiff and weak that's putting many people off from trying to integrate a yoga practice in their lives, the starting process can be the most challenging.

Also, nowadays there are many different styles to choose from, and it can feel unclear where and how to start.

For information on how you can start yoga, head to my following post below:

In this post I want to discuss the commitment and headspace that can help students begin to integrate a regular yoga practice into their lives.

Initially, it can feel like ‘another thing to do’ in our busy lives, but what can start out as something difficult with resistance, easily starts to feel like something we should have started years earlier, which is what I often hear from students.

‘Why didn’t I start this years ago?’

The initial uncomfortableness in the body starts to ease. The body feels nourished by moving with the breath and our mind, sleep and stress levels start to regulate. Often, students tell me how much their relationships have improved as they have more energy and time and space for the people they love. Which is the thing that people often feel they will lose by doing more things in their week.

Yoga makes space for ourselves and others in our life. We start to prioritize our needs in different ways and cherish the space we create for ourselves on our mats to reflect, still the mind and just be. A space without distractions, demands, judgment, responsibilities and pressure. A time and environment to recharge and practice self-love.

Reduced stress from yoga practice

I have many students who are mums and dads and I can see how important it is for parents to have some time for themselves. Students will often share how having yoga in their lives has helped create a healthy balance between energy out and energy coming back in.

Parenting is such a giving role and so much energy is given to our loved one’s that we can often forget about ourselves in the process. Taking time within our week to process and go inward is essential to bring about balance in our lives so we don’t burn out.

Restoring our energy levels with yoga

So much can be said about the benefits my students and others have found from integrating a regular yoga practice into their lives, but everything good in our lives comes from taking the first step and that step is into comitting. Making a commitment to ourselves to show up on our mats and to try. You don’t have to do advanced asanas or very long practices to feel the benefits of yoga. A little and often is better than nothing at all, and your body and mind will appreciate the input.

The transformational side of yoga comes from ritualizing a focused approach to movement and breath and to yourself. Yoga is a practice of love and that begins by allowing it into our lives to receive the maximum benefit.

Just like any relationship, yoga has it’s up and downs. Days when it feels harder or softer or where there is more resistance and fear. Joy and smiles and the highs with the lows. But the relationship you build with your practice, loving yourself and the practice through the highs and lows is what brings about real change.

Try and take the challenge and commit to one month's regular practice and see what happens. Something magical might happen where you see yourself in a new and different way that can lead you to a path of inner peace and bodily freedom.
